USC Statement on Return to Campus
The University Students’ Council is excited to welcome students back to campus, and we are looking forward to providing an exceptional student experience, which is in-line with all health and safety regulations. Last week, the Ministry of Colleges and Universities announced that campuses should plan for a normal return to campus. This includes no capacity limits in indoor spaces, including classrooms. Requirements for masking indoors will be announced in August. As it stands, there is no requirement to vaccinate to be on-campus with the exception of students living in residence where vaccinations are required.
Given this announcement, we know students will have questions about the updates on capacity limits on campus. We know that changes in capacity and physical distancing will offer new opportunities for clubs, events, and programs at Western. However, the change in regulations is still subject to Western University’s planning and guidelines from the Middlesex London Health Unit. The USC will operate our clubs, events, and programs in accordance with all government, university, and regional health guidelines. We will also take student feedback into account as we plan for our student activities and operations. As we get updates and more information, we will provide updates for students.
Regulations and guidelines will always be subject to change given the nature of COVID-19 and outbreaks. We always encourage students to get vaccinated, if it’s the right choice for them, to prevent outbreaks and stop the spread. Western University will have on campus vaccinations and testing available for students. Visit uwo.ca/coronavirus for more information.
As your student government, it is our job to listen and amplify your voice. This statement is meant to provide important updates on the return to campus planning, as well as to gather your input. Are you excited? Are you worried? We want to know.
