PRESS RELEASE: The University Students’ Council Approves Changes to Vice-President Communications and Public Affairs Position
The 2024-2025 Executive Team will see the current Vice-President Communications and Public Affairs position be renamed to Vice-President Student Engagement, with amended Terms of Reference
For Immediate Release
LONDON, Ontario, January 25, 2024 – The Vice-President (VP) Communications and Public Affairs position on the University Students’ Council (USC) Executive Team will undergo a name change and amended Terms of Reference for the 2024-25 term to better align with the USC strategic vision. The VP Communications and Public Affairs will now become the VP Student Engagement.
“This shift towards Student Engagement is a result of our evolving campus community and is a reflection of the USC’s long-term vision to better support students,” said Sunday Ajak, USC President. “The USC is really excited to welcome a new cohort of passionate students to the VP Student Engagement role.”
This decision was approved by the USC’s Executive Council and USC Council yesterday, based on consultations with past and current executives and USC staff. These changes will come into effect for Executive terms beginning in May 2024.
“Centering student engagement in a Vice-President portfolio is universally beneficial. Student participation and engagement with the USC has never been more needed than it is today – In order to tackle the myriad of crises facing students,” said Austin Wang, Social Science Councillor.
The VP Student Engagement will focus on meeting students where they are, telling the USC Story, and leading Student Engagement initiatives. The name change from VP Communications and Public Affairs reflects the significance of student engagement to the organization and the role, and centralizes a pillar of the USC’s strategic vision into an Executive position.
The Executive Team for 2024-25 will consist of: President, VP External Affairs, VP University Affairs, VP Orientation and Programming, VP Student Services, and VP Student Engagement.
More information and role descriptions will become available by the end of January. Follow @westernusc for updates on recruitment and hiring timelines, and @westernuscelections for elections information and coverage.
