USC Welcomes Continued Extension of Federal Student Financial Supports
LONDON, Ontario, March 26, 2026 — The University Students’ Council (USC) is pleased with the Government of Canada’s decision to maintain increased grant and loan maximums through the 2026-2027 academic year. By sustaining the 40% increase to Canada Student Financial Assistance grants, the federal government is ensuring eligible students continue to receive up to $4,200 in non-repayable aid. In an era of high inflation and rising costs, this extension provides vital stability and peace of mind for post-secondary students across the country.
Earlier this year, our President and Vice President, External Affairs were invited by MP Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary for Industry, to address the Government Youth Caucus. During this session, they discussed the need for increased investment in work-integrated learning and research opportunities, transit and student housing, and maintaining the Canada Student Grant maximums.
“A core pillar of our roadmap this year was bringing student perspectives to Parliament Hill and we’re proud to see the impact of our work in this announcement,” said Omar Sayyed, VP External Affairs, USC. “The continuation of these grants is a major win that ensures students have access to the financial resources they need to succeed next year. We are also happy to work alongside sector partners like the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) who are dedicated to amplifying the student voice to MPs nationwide.”
“We are grateful to the Minister of Jobs & Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, Hon. Patty Hadju, and MPs Amandeep Sodhi, Fares Al-Soud, and Jake Sawatzky, the leadership of government youth caucus, for continuing to invest in the future of young Canadians and seeing the value in affordable access to higher education,” said Kathleena Henricus, USC President.
The USC remains committed to working with all three levels of government to ensure student voices are heard and student needs are met.

The University Students’ Council (USC) is a student-led organization that first and foremost exists to advocate for and represent undergraduate students at Western University. Since 1965, we have grown beyond an advocacy organization, becoming one of the largest student governments in Canada and one of the largest nonprofits in London. Each day, we work to support, improve and enhance the student experience on campus, because we believe that students have the power to change the world.
